M&S Teacakes Take on the Treasury

11 04 2008

Brand: M&S

A genius piece of publicity for M&S in today’s papers. After a 12 year legal battle they have now won a £3.5m tax repayment on their Teacakes. It turns out under tax law chocolate biccies are subject to standard rate tax, where as chocolate cakes incur none. A fascinating legal battle has dragged on that surely must’ve generated more on AVE than M&S have won back in tax. Ok so there’s a few “it’s cost the taxpayer this much” angles, but basically it’s a 12 year PR campaign that says, “we sell nice middle-class British food, don’t you know.”
